In Yari and Cary Wolinsky’s awe-inspiring documentary RAISE THE ROOF, we witness the construction and the 2014 unveiling of the Gwozdziec roof, the centerpiece of POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw.
Neither Jewish nor Polish, artists and educators Rick and Laura Brown of Handshouse Studio embarked on a 10-year mission to reconstruct the Gwozdziec Synagogue, an 18th century Polish synagogue whose distinct architecture rivals the greatest wooden architecture in history. Leading more than 300 students and professionals from 16 countries, the Browns discover a lost world in the midst of grappling with how to accurately engineer the synagogue’s elaborate roof and painted ceiling with the period tools and methods used by the original builders. By the end of their incredible journey, they achieve a feat even more remarkable than the restoration of a lost wooden synagogue. Collectively, their efforts have empowered a new generation of Poles to connect to their history and shape the Poland of tomorrow.
