“You can taste the diaspora,” says David “Ziggy” Gruber, a third generation deli man, and owner of Kenny & Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen in Houston, Texas. Though the affable Gruber and his story are the main focus of this tantalizing new documentary by PJFF alumnus Erik Greenberg Anjou (The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground), we are also treated to a pastrami sandwich-sized serving of both delicatessen and American Jewish history.
Interviewing both veterans and newcomers to the deli scene, Anjou travels the country sampling traditional Jewish deli fare and chatting with regulars about their favorite dishes, while back home in NYC, old-style deli connoisseurs like Fyvush Finkel, Jerry Stiller, and Larry King emphatically share what it is that brings them back, year after year. What makes DELI MAN even more entertaining is that rather than bemoaning the ever-shrinking kosher deli scene, it celebrates these uniquely American Jewish institutions and their enduring resonance for Americans today.
