Ludwigg Guttman, a Jewish neurologist and refugee from Nazi Germany, is sent to the UK to take care of severely injured British serviceman. In learning that the hospital’s method of treatment is merely to manage the decline of its patients, he quickly initiates a radical new approach. Rather than view his patients as bedridden invalids, he instills the soldiers with agency and initiative. His goal: get these men as active as possible and help them rebuild their self-esteem. Of course, change is never met without its fair share of resistance. The Best of Men is the incredible true story of the events that led to the founding of the Paralympic Games. Eddie Marsan brilliantly delivers as Guttman, trumpeting relentless determination as the man responsible for changing the way paraplegics are viewed and treated throughout the world.
