In 1948, a group of American World War II pilots volunteered to fight for Israel in the War of Independence. As members of “Machal,” volunteers from abroad, this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war, preventing the possible annihilation of Israel at the very moment of its birth, they also laid the groundwork for the Israeli Air Force. In heeding Israel’s call for help, this tiny band of airmen risked their citizenship, their futures, and even their lives. Above and Beyond gives these honorable men their due.
This gripping documentary produced by Nancy Spielberg, younger sister to Steven, and directed by Roberta Grossman (Hava Nagila, Blessed is the Match), is packed with intrigue and suspense. A bona fide crowd pleaser, the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival is pleased to present the Philadelphia Premiere of Above and Beyond on Closing Night of its 2014 Fall Festival.
