Who is Ed Koch, really? Some claim he single-handedly turned New York City into the success it is today, while others have faulted his compromised liberalism. The wisecracking Koch rose through New York’s Democratic Party as a reform candidate, championing progressive causes, unexpectedly winning the mayoral race as a get-tough, no-nonsense candidate, and eventually losing a governor’s race to a young Mario Cuomo. Neil Barsky’s rousing debut documentary delves deep into Koch, the inner person, thoughtfully exposing a side of the mayor most have never seen before. From his young idealistic beginnings through his final two years as a candid, curmudgeonly political lion, one thing is certain: while Ed Koch is still considered by many to be New York’s quintessential mayor, he is equally reviled by others for his perceived political failings. Koch’s signature phrase: ‘How am I doing?’ invites viewers to assess his impressive, if checkered career, as the New York City Mayor who wasn’t afraid to ‘turn the beat around’ and make some noise.
