Guest speaker update: Director Melissa Donovan regrets that she is unable to attend

A documentary with a heart as big as Africa, Melissa Donovan’s Kodak Cinematography Award Winner, ZEMENE, introduces us to a wise-beyond-her-years, 10-year-old Ethiopian girl suffering from severe Kyphosis (a painful and often fatal spine defect). After Zemene’s mother dies from a fatal mosquito bite, Zemene is sent to live with her uncle and grandparents in a small remote village in the beautiful but impoverished highlands of Ethiopia. When her loving uncle, Menormelkam, takes her to the city to be examined, doctors there tell them there is no cure for Zemene’s condition. Despite her bleak prognosis, a chance encounter on the street with Rick Hodes, an American-Jewish doctor treating spinal injury patients in Ethiopia, changes Zemene’s life forever. ZEMENE is a testament to the power of the human spirit and offers proof that, even against the odds, a determined individual can make a difference.
