“America must not become a nation of onlookers. America must not remain silent.”

-Rabbi Joachim Prinz

In 1930s Berlin, a young rabbi named Joachim Prinz refused to keep quiet while the rights and dignity of German Jews were being systematically stripped away. In an attempt to raise Jewish morale, Prinz preached about the value of Judaism and the importance of self-preservation. After being expelled from Berlin in 1937, he immigrated to the United States where the tenets of democracy and freedom reigned. Unfortunately, it did not take long for America to bear its own strange fruit. After witnessing the widespread racism against African-Americans, Prinz renewed his commitment to restoring justice to his fellow man.

As rabbi of Temple B’nai Abraham in Newark, NJ and later as President of the American Jewish Congress, Prinz grew to be a key leader in the civil rights movement, working alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to organize the 1963 March on Washington. Addressing thousands of hopeful onlookers moments before King would most notably proclaim “I have a dream, it was on this day that Prinz asked Americans to make their voices heard.

This compelling documentary by Rachel Eskin Fisher and Rachel Nierenberg Pasternak traces the remarkable life of Joachim Prinz, his contributions to strengthening Jewish-Black relations in America, and the power of our collective voice in the universal struggle for peace.
