Najan González Norvind was awarded Best Actress at the Morelia International Film Festival for her delicate portrayal of Ariela, a twenty-something street artist from Mexico City who finds herself torn between her responsibilities to her Syrian-Jewish family and her commitment to her non-Jewish Mexican boyfriend.
When Ariela (Najan González Norvind) first moves in with Iván (Christian Vazquez), she hopes that living together will bring the young couple closer. She does not want to consider the possibility that her excuses for not introducing her boyfriend to her family could cause a rift in their relationship. After admitting her feelings to her mother, it’s become clear that a courtship with Iván would not be tolerated and prolonging their affair would only result in being rejected by her community and shunned by her own family. Besides, with Iván’s insecurities growing impossible to ignore, it’s only a matter of time before Ariela is forced to contend with reality. It’s not lost on her that the decision she’s about to make will inevitably lead to the rest of her life.
Bridging the divide between generations, faiths, and cultures, writer-director Isaac Cherem’s directorial debut invites viewers into Ariela’s personal journey of discovery and self-determination. With its blend of romance, humor, and thoughtful introspection, LEONA offers a rare and intimate glimpse into a young Jewish woman’s coming-of-age in Mexico City.
