Philadelphia Premiere

This riveting biopic recalls the remarkable life story of Bert Trautmann (David Kross, The Reader), the German footballer who arrived in Manchester City with talent, promise, and the burden of a sordid past.

As the Luftwaffe bombs England, Trautmann, a paratrooper for the Third Reich, is captured along the Eastern Front. Transported to a military camp in England, the POW quickly learns that decorated SS veterans like him are no longer seen as heroes. Forced to endure a film that bared witness to the atrocities committed against recently freed concentration camp survivors, he begins to reexamine his own experience during the war and his perceived allegiance to his homeland. When consigned to work in a nearby town, Trautmann is inadvertently outed as a gifted goalkeeper and asked to play football for the local team as an alternative to hard labor. Though it takes time for some of the towns’ folk to warm up to him, his remarkable football record helps ease the transition from sworn enemy to celebrated guest. Even the coach’s daughter, who at first vociferously opposed Trautmann’s presence in her home and on the team, begins to fall for the rising football star.

THE KEEPER has all the trappings of an epic love story, yet it does not shy away from exploring the controversy that arose over Trautmann’s signing in Manchester. The city’s football fans, many of whom were Jewish, were outraged and openly opposed Trautmann playing on the Manchester team. In fact, if it wasn’t for Rabbi Altmann – a Manchester fan who fled the Nazis – intervening and opposing the opposition, Trautmann wouldn’t have stood a chance against the backlash. With its unexpected twists and turns, this tale of forgiveness, loyalty, and the capacity of sports to both divide and unite us has won over audiences and critics around the world.
