The Gershman Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival and University of Pennsylvania’s Cinema and Media Studies Department present an intimate, behind-the-scenes Master Class on independent non-fiction storytelling with documentary filmmaker Dani Menkin.
The Israeli-American filmmaker’s award-winning documentary, On the Map (2016), about the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team that galvanized Israel’s national pride, screened at over 100 film festivals around the world and opened to rave reviews in the Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Hollywood Reporter. Dolphin Boy (2011), Menkin’s acclaimed film about a traumatized young boy who is taken to the Red Sea to be rehabilitated by dolphins after being physically assaulted by his classmates, received a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, was sold to over 20 countries, and was bought by Walt Disney Pictures for adaptation. Menkin’s first feature documentary, 39 Pounds of Love (2005), which he wrote, produced and directed, sold to HBO and Cinemax in addition to being shortlisted for the Oscars. It was also awarded Best Documentary by the Israeli Film Academy.
In this two-hour Master Class, Menkin will screen key clips from his new documentary, PICTURE OF HIS LIFE (2019), which attendees can view in its entirety on Opening Night of GPJFF’s 39th Annual Fall Fest, as well as some of his favorite scenes from the documentaries named above. Students, GPJFF patrons, and the Greater Philadelphia film community are invited to participate in this free educational program that offers greater insight into Menkin’s artistic practice in story, craft, and form. Topics covered by Menkin in this workshop will include the role of documentary cinema as a social and political tool, story development, fostering a strong artistic vision, establishing trust among documentary subjects, acquiring funding for your documentary, and distribution.
The class will be followed by a complimentary lunch reception where participants can converse with Menkin one-on-one and continue the conversation in a more intimate setting. As space is limited, pre-registration is encouraged. To reserve your seat, please call (215) 545-4400 or visit register above.
